Free Applications For your Go! FAQ

Q: WTF is 5.202 and where can I get it

A: 5.202 is an update provided with the SDK by TomTom. There's a copy in the main zip file. Be sure to read the TomTom-license file for the terms of use of 5.202.

Q: I followed the instructions to create a tomtom.mnu file but I get a different icon on the first page not the quickcam one.

A: Yes, sorry. This isn't my fault it's just the implementation method that TomTom chose to use. It sucks. The only reliable solution I've found is to rename the tomtom.mnu file to something like tomtom.xxx. Then restart your Go. Ok, so now what you do is tap the centre of the screen once to bring up the menu. Use the arrow pointing to the right to find the first page the new applications. The one that is in the top left is numbered 1, see diagram below

1 2 3
4 5
So note where the Quickam icon appears, take a note of it's number. Connect your Go to your PC again and rename tomtom.xxx back to tomtom.mnu and then edit it. On the entry for the first page there's a line :

MENUITEM|TASK_SDKx|

where x is a number. Change this number to the number you got from the previous stage. Restart your Go and the Quickam icon should appear on the first page.

Q: The Set Timezone app wont let me set the time zone to summer time or any other time zone so as a result it thinks the time is 1 hour earlier than it is.

A: In reality the Timezone app is not your timezone, it's your current offset from UTC

Q: SatSync does not seem to set the hardware clock for me (I changed it by 5 minutes, rebooted, then tried SatSync, but the hardware clock remained off by 5 minutes - even though the What Time is it displayed correctly)

A: If you change the clock using the built in app then the sync doesn't work (I think the Go stops looking at the internal clock). I've found that after a reset, running satsync sets both. So don't mess with the built in clock tool... use satsync and the timezone app

Q: If I remove and replace the sd card or do a reset I get "Starting SatSync" and "Starting Autoswitcher" Ok thats fine but when switching the unit on using the power switch I get either nothing displayed in the top right corner or get "Retrieving Data" Thats it is this correct ??

A: You only see the Starting messages after a reset because the power button is actually just a sleep/resume button, the applications are still running. The messages only appear as the applications start. Removing and replacing the SD card effectively restarts the Go navigation application, which causes the applications to die, and then restart.

Q: Does it make any difference if the unit has no sat signal on start up to the running of the applications ?

A: No. The applications initially wait for a signal then continue. SatSync will keep looking at the data until it recives a packet with the Date and Time after which it will then sleep for 8 hours before re-syncing. Autoswitcher waits for the initial signal then continues. If the signal disappears then it won't switch colour schemes until there is one. The reason is fairly simple. AutoSwitcher checks your lat/lon each time, and modifies its trigger time accordingly.

Q: Are these applications safe to use?

A: Safe is a relative term. I use them all too. The applications only open files to be read in read only mode, The Set Timezone app opens for read and write. In all honesty you aren't going to believe what I say when I answer this question. Go to the forums (PocketGPSWorld and MyTomTomGo) and read what other people think.

Q: I know this info is on this forum but maybe you should add these questions and answers to your read me file to save having to either send this link or keep repeating yourself.

A: Good Point. This FAQ should help.

Q: Is it possible to get the TTG to play a voice when it changes over, ie. the cuckoo sound.

A: Yes and no. There's no support for accessing the data.chk file in the SDK, so this means very experimental code, or I can use stock code to play an ogg or wav etc. Bear in mind that this would be read from the SD card so there would be a pause while the data was read. SD Cards are slow. I'll look into adding this.

Q: I experience a second or so freeze when I poked at some icons

A: SD Cards are slow, the application needs to be read off the SD card. After setting up communications with the main TomTom application, the firs thing all my apps do is bring the TomTom app to the front. I'm not sure I can speed it up any more than that.

Q: Are these applications really free?

A: Yes.

Q: Why can't I put these applications on Ebay?

A: Because you would be breaching the terms of the license agreement.

Q: Ok, but why did you add that specifically to the license?

A: Simply because some people have been selling the work of others on Ebay for their own gain.

Q: Oh, that's not nice is it.

A: No.

Q: Can I send you something for your trouble.

A: You can if you like. I'd like a Go 700 please :D.. Failing that you can, but are not required to, use this donate button :
